In this intimate self-portrait, Michael V. Smith’s The Floating Man sources his art practice to examine a lifetime of untrue stories about his body. Beginning with interviews in his hometown, and moving forward through mentors and students of his own, Smith explores the kaleidoscope of a body’s relationship with gender.
The Floating Man is a blend of present day interviews, archival footage from past performances, video poems, art shows and a "failed" documentary that follows Peanut The Dancing Clown on a 3-day road trip in search of Joni Mitchell. An absolute joy to edit, all of these elements work together to form a deeply personal and uplifting documentary that explores and unravels ideas about the body, gender and our relationship to ourselves and each other.
